U.U.P.G. (Unengaged, Unreached People Group)
The People of East Africa
In the spring of 2012, Lake Fork Baptist Church felt led of God to send a Vision Team of three men to explore the possibilities of reaching an unreached, unengaged people group in East Africa. They are labeled “unreached” because less than two percent of these people are Christ followers. They are labeled “unengaged” because there is no current mission endeavor to reach this group of people by evangelicals. The research told us that these people were too far away, too difficult to reach, and too dangerous to encounter.
With a firm conviction in our hearts that no person is too far away from the grace and love of Jesus, the Vision Team met with pastors from other areas of Africa and drove eleven hours in four wheel drive vehicles through tremendously difficult terrain to get to the villages. We found that God had prepared everything for our arrival. God led us directly to a young man in the first village who would eventually be baptized that same day and surrender to serve as the first pastor among the Sonjo people. The Vision Trip produced an incredible harvest of people praying to receive Christ. It is estimated that over 1,100 people gave their hearts to Jesus! Praise the Lord!
On Sunday, August 19, 2012, in our morning worship service, the church voted overwhelmingly to officially “embrace” this people group. LFBC made a commitment to take the lead in reaching these East African people with the gospel of Christ. We agreed to be their missionary – to help them spread the gospel, build and grow churches, and train pastors in all seven villages. On Monday, August 20, 2012, Bob returned with a Mission Committee member to help the believers build their first church structure. On Wednesday, August 29, 2012, Bob called Brother Perry to say that the first Baptist church among the people is in place and will be dedicated Sunday, September 2, 2012 with a baptism service to follow.
Our Lord Jesus gave us His commission in Acts 1:8 to win the lost and develop them as His disciples. We are to start right here in the Lake Fork area – our Jerusalem. Our home town is where we start, but not where we stop. God has called us to go here and everywhere with the good news of Jesus Christ. By taking this commission seriously, it is a new day in missions at Lake Fork Baptist Church. Missions is not a program here. It is not something we do occasionally. It is who we are and what we do every day right here at Highway 515 in Alba, Texas and wherever else God sends us. If you are willing for God to expand your borders and use you as a witness with an Acts 1:8 worldview, then you can be assured that we will do everything we can to equip you for the task. Join us as we seek to have a heart for the world as God has, and become involved in fulfilling His commission.
